Both names describe the cone, not the ice cream
Sugar cones and waffle cones are baked, crisp options commonly supplied with a pointed base. A waffle pattern alone does not distinguish them. Shops may show several sizes, dipped versions or bowls, so look at the actual cone on offer rather than ordering only from its name.
Compare the opening and the portion
Waffle cones often have a broader opening than a standard sugar cone, but manufacturers supply multiple sizes of both. Ask which cone fits the portion you want and whether it changes the serving or price. A large-looking cone does not automatically include more ice cream.
Cake cones are a separate option
A cake cone or cake cup has a lighter wafer-style structure. Some have a flat base, while pointed versions also exist. If you want to set the cone down, check the actual shape. A cup and spoon may be easier when trying several flavours or carrying an order for someone else.
Check coatings and ingredients separately
Chocolate dips, sprinkles and other coatings can change the order and its ingredients. Ask whether they cost extra and check the specific cone when an ingredient matters. Confirm the flavour, portion, cone style and extras together before the server prepares the scoop.
