Frozen yogurt vs ice cream: compare the actual serving

Look beyond the label to the flavour, ingredients and toppings.

Frozen yogurt uses a cultured base

Frozen yogurt generally uses cultured dairy ingredients, while ice cream follows a different recipe and preparation. A frozen-yogurt menu can include tart and sweet flavours, plus other frozen desserts. Read the flavour description rather than expecting every item at the same counter to taste tangy.

A category name is not a nutrition comparison

Recipes, portions and toppings vary. If you want to compare published nutrition information, use the same serving weight and include the extras you intend to add. Do not infer a particular sugar, fat or calorie content simply from the words yogurt, soft serve or ice cream.

Check flavour-specific ingredients

An ingredient list belongs to a particular flavour or product. A statement about live cultures, dairy or other ingredients should be checked against that product’s information. Ask staff about ingredient restrictions and preparation before ordering; the menu category alone cannot answer those questions.

Understand how your portion is priced

At a self-serve location, check whether the finished cup is weighed and how toppings are charged. At a staffed counter, check the sizes and what is included. Start with the portion and toppings you want, then compare the full order rather than a headline price for a different serving.
